Parenting

Recently, I started to have doubts abt my own parenting method.. I used to believe that instilling a set of disciplined routine into the children's life at early stage is beneficial.. Lately Caden has been easily tempered. He started whining really badly when things don't go in his way. I remembered just having a conclusive comment with ah Lou a few weeks back that Caden seemed to be more tamed these days and can be considered as one of the easier child to manage. However whenever he drops back to his whiny self, one of us will definitely get irritated and it takes a lot to control yourself to be extra patient with him during the entire crying process.

Typically I used the cooling off way- bringing him to the door and telling him that I'll send him out of the house if he continues to whine. My ah Lou is usually cold.. He prefers to let him finish with his crying by himself if he is able to tolerate those whining. If Caden hits a bad day from his father, the cane marks will be there for him to bear.

I seem to have not been able to master how best to manage my child under difficult or stressed situations.. Sometimes I'll just dwell deep into not being able to play the role of a mother well.. It's really frustrating to see the child not being able to listen when you need them to be.. Especially when one has so many other things to work on - perhaps, this period has been a toil on us given that we had to see through so many housechores on weekdays and weekends. It's not easy to have a good break mentally, and I gathered the only time to do so is when the 2 boys are both taking their afternoon naps on sat! Hopefully things just gets better in 3 weeks time when the new helper is here.

HFMD

It has been confirmed. Ethan is officially down with HFMD as he came down with fever on Monday and red spots rapidly appeared on his hands, base of his feet and knee cap. We also saw ulcers formed on his tongue and back of his mouth.

My heart sank. To know that he got infected with HFMD is like knowing an enemy is out there threatening your children yet as parents we were helpless to defend it from attacking. Ethan lost all appetite today, we had to ensure that he gets hydrated most importantly as the ulcers would have caused a lot of pain to the poor boy.

Caden is still cleared now.. The thing abt HFMD is that it's not a virus that one gets once in a lifetime like chickenpox. The same HFMD can recur to a person for as long as it is transmitted from another infected person.. While Ethan is easily grouchy these 2 days, we hope that the virus can be contained and stopped infecting the next person within the house..

(adding on to the agony, my flu bug worsen these 2 days)..

Battling with HFMD

For the last few days, we were all battling with the HFMD virus that is hovering in my house. Sam came over last Monday as usual after school and did not have the appetite to finish his lunch and complained sore throat. My mil finished up his food eventually not knowing that Sam is already infected with HFMD virus.

So he became the first confirmed case of HFMD on Monday after his parents brought him to the PD on that night. We offered to keep Kimi at our place so that she can be quarantined from his brother during this period and Kimi had been staying with us from Tues onwards then.

On Wed night, I was suddenly infected with high fever and vomiting. The fever and vomit persisted and kept me out of work on Thurs and Friday. Kimi did not need to attend school on Thurs and Friday (due to PSLE oral) and had also stayed at home with me. My mil asked her to let me check on herself on Friday morning as she had started to complain about sore throat as well. Using a touch light, I found some ulcers forming at the back of her mouth and confirmed to my mil that she's also infected with HFMD. I was also unsure if I myself will be infected with HFMD (although I did not have any personal contact with Sam).

At the point, my heart sank.. I thought I had seen Ethan passing a sweet to Kimi during her stay her and both of them played pretty closely. To date, Ethan had not display any signs of appetite loss nor sore throat (or maybe he doesnt know yet) but we seem to see some funny shapes forming on his tougue.. hopefully it's false alarm but we can only confirm tomorrow and see if these funny stuff will start to form into ulcers. My previous personal encounter of HFMD was only hundreds of ulcers around my lips and back of my mouth but didnt have them on my tougue. So I cant really tell if those whitish stuff are part of the HFMD..

It's really a mental battle now - worrying and hoping that both my boys are going to be kept safe from the virus. We are also hoping that my mil will have strong resistance to defend herself from HFMD since she ate up all of Sam's food.

Peace comes with loads of hard work

It has been almost 3 weeks that we were coping without a maid since the new maid was sent back to the agent after putting up a strike at work. It was really hard adjusting without a maid's help after all these years. Each night, after we finished our dinner, the usual routine starts with washing up the dishes, pots, kitchen hob and table tops, etc. Mopping the floors (kitchen + living room), ironing the clothes, packing up children's stuff for school the next day.. coupled with attending to their needs (usually they asked alot of our attention when we are back from work), ferrying Caden to and fro from classes on some nights... and the list goes on.

However, after 3 straight weeks of intensive work, the routine got settled in and ah lou basically helps to mop the floors and wash up the dishes while I spent time with the children and iron the clothes and packs up the living room mess. I kinda of now like the peace that we get on weekends, without the presence of the maid and really can feel the warmth of the house of us being alone for once (after so long)..

Caden and Ethan have now also been forced to take more ownership of their self being, they need to get themselves changed after school, feed themselves on both lunch and dinner and Caden gets to bathe himself now, cleans up his own poo (since we are also preparing him for P1 next year). We were just discussing if the next maid doesnt work out again, we probably may want to just do without a maid permanently but definitely have to get our father-in-law to be around as well to jagar the kids while my mil is busy cooking...

For a long time, the boys were so busy doing their own stuff till we allow them to sleep at 11pm yesterday..

Aidan was warded

We were having our usual gathering on the 13th Aug at my place for a usual catch up MJ plus beyblade session for the boys. Aidan was already not well on that day and looked very tired. As our boys had to attend night classes at Berries thereafter, all of them took their afternoon nap by 3pm and nothing seemed to be amissed then.

To our surprise, Auntie Winnie text Mummy and told her the next day that Aidan had an acute asmatha attack on that Sat night and was sent to A&E at KK hospital. We went to visit him straight after Caden's piano lesson to see how he was. It was the boys first visit to the hospital as visitors for their friend.. (Caden has been admitted to KK hospital just before he turned 4 years for a 7-stitch job).

The boys were not too sure what to do when they see their friend laying on the bed and connected to a drip. Instead, they cast their eyes on a ipad that Elliot was playing together with Issac (their cousin) and quickly stayed close to that gadget instead of checking out how their friend was doing..

the boys stayed close to Issac who's holding on to the ipad

It was only after a while that they decided to play with Aidan who was extremely breathless and bored sitting there on the bed. They shared with him the train toys which they got from their Mac's happy meals.

Fortunately, Aidan was discharged after 2 nights stay and had only to be on the inhaler for the next 2 weeks.
